ABSTRACT:
Increasing globalisation and restrictions caused by the pandemic have introduced a new paradigm of online teaching and learning process. Nowadays, the use of information and communication technology (ICT) has redefined the educational sector and particularly foreign language education by focusing on creating more flexible, interactive and student-centered learning environments. An important aspect of the online educational process is online assessment, as the adoption of ICT in classrooms has greatly influenced the way the assessment is carried out. This study seeks to explore Greek and Russian EFL university students’ awareness and attitudes towards the use of electronic portfolios as one of the most suitable forms of formative assessment to monitor the process and progress of foreign language learning for online language education. To that end, data will be collected by approximately 200 participants via an online questionnaire. Formative assessment, and especially the use of e-portfolios, is suggested by the authors as a meaningful, effective and more beneficial means of online assessment for learning which could lead to significantly better results for the students. Based on the findings obtained, the authors will attempt to develop practical recommendations for English practitioners in teaching English online who seek educational support in this area.
