Strengthening Child and Family Engagement for Improved Primary Education Outcomes: A Case Study of Kigali City, Rwanda

ABSTRACT:

This paper explores the influence of child and family engagement on learning outcomes in primary education, focusing on everyday experiences within Kigali City’s school environment. Although Rwanda has expanded access to primary schooling, many children continue to rely heavily on the level of support they receive at home, making family involvement a crucial factor in their academic journey. The study examines how active participation from parents, nurturing home routines, and community-oriented educational practices contribute to children’s academic success and overall well-being. Insights drawn from urban primary schools in Kigali reveal persistent challenges such as limited parental involvement, financial pressures on families, and irregular communication between parents and teachers. The paper also reviews promising approaches being used in schools, including stronger parent–teacher cooperation, outreach initiatives aimed at guiding families, and classroom practices that recognize the important role of the home environment. Findings suggest that meaningful collaboration between schools and families significantly enhances literacy development, motivation, and emotional stability among learners. The study concludes that reinforcing family–school partnerships and equipping parents with relevant skills can greatly improve the quality of primary education and help children thrive both academically and socially.
