The Importance of Disaster Management and Social Works in Extreme Weather Events Related to the Climate Crisis

ABSTRACT:

Social work develops the foundations of human rights and social justice, also addresses issues of environmental justice, ecological justice, and climate justice. The need for social work to collaborate with other climate-related professions is paramount in understanding the causes of and proposed solutions to climate-related disasters. Developing disaster management recommendations by evaluating the impacts of the climate crisis and services in a multidisciplinary manner. The research was planned as a qualitative case study. In the study, a total of 27 people affected by the disaster were interviewed in the Kumluca region, where floods occurred in 2022, and in Manavgat, where a forest fire occurred in 2021. In addition, a total of 41 people from different professional groups such as social workers, urban planners, and engineers working in this field were interviewed. The interviews were analyzed by content analysis with the MAXQDA 2023 qualitative analysis program. The research concluded that a holistic perspective within social work is crucial for preventing extreme weather events related to the climate crisis, and that working collaboratively with other disciplines is crucial. Various professionals emphasized the importance of participation in climate crisis-related policies and the importance of consulting with other professionals working on this issue. It was observed that there is a lack of preventative and protective measures in climate crisis and disaster-focused work, social workers face challenges in their practice.
