Gender Inequality in Crisis: An examination of Maternal Health (in)Equality in Climate Crises
Dr. Sarah Lockwood
ABSTRACT:
According to the United Nations, pregnant women are among the most vulnerable populations during climate crises, as such events amplify existing gendered health inequalities. Despite international recognition of the climate crisis as a significant threat to maternal health, there are no comprehensive studies focused on maternal equality in the context of climate emergencies. This oversight threatens progress toward global maternal health targets. My research addresses this gap, providing recommendations and evidence to support the prioritization of pregnant women in crisis response plans, whilst challenging dominant discourses that fail to consider maternal health during climate crises. The study responds to urgent calls throughout the world, to consider gendered health equality in an increasingly unstable climate future.
