Responsible Environmental Behavior: A comparative study on Thai and Indian consumers
Dr. Patricia Arttachariya
ABSTRACT:
Several studies have provided evidence of the negative impacts of climate change, such as, intensified extreme weather, rising sea levels, flooding and uncertain seasons. We can also see the impact of climate change in other ways, such as, coral bleaching due to high sea temperatures, rising levels of criminal activities with a rise in mercury levels, as well as the impact on national security with the erosion of many national borders due to rising sea levels. The aim of this study was to measure the differences between Indian and Thai respondents on environmental knowledge, interpersonal and social influences, value orientation, awareness of climate change and responsible environmental behavior (REB). A total of 353 respondents (201 Thais and 152 Indians) was selected for the study, using purposive sampling. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data obtained via self-administered questionnaires with hypotheses posited in this study tested by independent samples t-test. The findings revealed significant differences between respondents of the two countries in environmental knowledge, interpersonal and social media influence, and value orientation on awareness of climate change. Moreover, significant difference was also evident between respondents in the two countries in awareness of climate change and responsible environmental behavior. The study adds to the extant literature with the findings providing policy makers, marketers, and consumer groups with empirical knowledge to help mitigate the negative impacts of climate change in the Thai and Indian context.
