Digital Enablers of Business Model Innovation for Sustainability: A Conceptual Review in the Context of Indonesian Firms
Annasya Syadzwina, Eko Agus Prasetio
ABSTRACT:
In emerging economies such as Indonesia, digital transformation and sustainability are increasingly influencing how firms respond to environmental issues, institutional constraints, and dynamic market conditions. These pressures have encouraged firms to move beyond profit-driven approaches and redesign how value is created, captured and delivered. At the same time, the growing use of digital technologies is changing business practices and shaping new approaches to innovation. Despite this trend, limited attention has been given to how digital transformation contributes to the development of sustainable business models, particularly in resource-constrained settings. This study explores the role of digital enablers in supporting Business Model Innovation (BMI) and sustainability outcomes among Indonesian firms. The study draws on a peer review of 15 articles published between 2013 and 2025, covering both conceptual and empirical research on digital transformation, sustainability, and business model innovation, with particular relevance to Southeast Asia and Indonesia. The framework was examined using the Antecedents-Mediators-Outcomes (AMO) framework and analyzed through thematic analysis. The findings highlight three interrelated themes: (1) digital infrastructure and platforms act as enablers of strategic business transformation; (2) BMI serves as a mediator in redesigning value propositions, delivery systems, and revenue models aligning sustainability goals; (3) the contextual challenges, including regulatory conditions, cultural dynamics, and innovation capability that shape both digital adoption and its outcomes. Based on these insights, the study proposes a conceptual framework linking digital enablers, business model change, and sustainability performance. As a conceptual review, the framework requires further empirical validation in Indonesia and other emerging-market countries.
