César Mayorga Abril, Juan Villegas López, Mery Ruiz Guajala, Rita Santana Mayorga
ABSTRACT:
This study evaluates the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices among rural farmers in Tungurahua, Ecuador. The focus is on gender inclusivity and the perceived impact on economic, social and environmental factors. The research aims to identify the key factors that influence farmers’ intentions to implement sustainable practices, as well as the benefits they associate with doing so. A structured survey was administered to a non-probability sample of 954 farmers to collect data on five dimensions: intention to implement; economic, social and environmental sustainability; and perceived benefits. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to assess the reliability and validity of the measurement scales, and correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the different dimensions. The results revealed strong internal consistency across all dimensions, with significant positive correlations indicating that economic incentives, social recognition and environmental improvements collectively drive adoption. The results reveal distinct motivational drivers for men and women, indicating that gender-responsive strategies are essential for promoting sustainable agriculture. These findings offer policymakers and practitioners clear guidance on how to design more effective, targeted interventions.
