The Concept of Work-Life Balance: The Case of Indeed
Prof Dr. Ioanna Dimitrakaki, Sachinidis Alexandros
ABSTRACT:
The concept of work-life balance has become a crucial research area as workplace conditions continue to evolve in response to economic uncertainty and growing competition among organizations. Increasing competition and technological advancements have shaped a workforce and clientele that are more informed than ever. Modern employees can compare their working conditions while simultaneously assessing their overall professional experience, both objectively and subjectively, in relation to their connection with organizations. Work-life balance refers to the extent to which individuals can manage their time between professional responsibilities and personal activities. As it is suggested, definitions of work-life balance (WLB) are largely subjective, as perceptions of balance vary among individuals and depend on the level of satisfaction derived from both work and personal life. A rigid interpretation may view balance as an equal distribution of time between professional and personal spheres. However, within a more flexible framework, it reflects an individual’s ability to integrate work and personal responsibilities in alignment with personal expectations and the demands of each domain. In today’s workplace, the distinction between professional and personal life is often blurred. For many employees, the workplace is not only a professional setting but also a social environment that enhances self-esteem, shapes personal identity, and fulfills psychological needs. However, when work-life balance is disrupted, it can result in emotional and behavioral issues, ultimately affecting productivity and employees’ attitudes toward their organization. This study explores the concept of work-life balance, the factors that contribute to its improvement, and its impact on organizations. A case study research method was adopted, relying on secondary data. Case study research is a qualitative methodology that involves an in-depth examination of a specific case or multiple cases within their real-world context. It is widely applied across academic disciplines, as it offers comprehensive insights into complex phenomena that may not be fully captured through quantitative approaches alone. This method enables researchers to analyze the dynamics of a particular situation or organization over time.
