Prof. Aytac Gogus, Nihat G. Gogus
ABSTRACT:
Understanding students’ perceived benefits, concerns, and chancing expectations in learning environments is vital for quality of higher education. This study aims to present university students’ perceived benefits and concerns related to using of ChatGPT and similar artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in higher education as a result of the survey study in universities in Istanbul. According to the previous studies and technology acceptance models understanding students’ attitudes and engagement with GenAI requires a detailed investigation of a complex interaction between perceived benefits, concerns and demographic characteristics. Among demographic variables such as gender, age, class level, field of study may influence students’ perception. Perceived benefits refer to students’ beliefs that using GenAI enhances students’ writing skills, critical thinking skills, research skills and learning skills. Concerns refer to misuse of personal information, reaching false information and hallucinations, negative consequences of overuse and misuse. This study suggests that AI technologies used by university students can support their academic goals to become productive, individualized, and proficient in their subject however, concerns about academic honesty, plagiarism, gaining unfair advantage in assessments, and accessing false information are important issues for academic integrity and learning progress.
