Pre-Service German Teachers' Motivation to Learn with Generative Artificial Intelligence

Dr. Hamdullah Sahin

ABSTRACT:

The widespread adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) technologies has affected language learning and teaching. The ability to quickly adapt to and apply GenAI effectively in future teaching practices has been considered directly linked to pre-service teachers’ motivation to use it. However, there is a need to investigate whether teacher candidates are motivated and how they are motivated (intrinsically or extrinsically) about learning with GenAI in order to support them in teacher education. Based on self-determination theory, this study aims to examine pre-service teachers’ motivation towards GenAI considering the relations among intrinsic motivation, amotivation, identified, introjected, and external regulations. 94 pre-service German teachers responded to the AI Motivation Scale. The descriptive statistics and correlation analysis were conducted. The results indicated most of them used ChatGPT and Gemini. Also, it was revealed the participants’ autonomous motivation (intrinsic motivation and identified regulation) regarding GenAI use was the highest, and there is a strong positive significant correlation between these two. Moreover, despite low mean scores of controlled motivation in external and introjected regulation, a moderate positive significant correlation was found between them. However, there is a strong negative significant relationship between amotivation and intrinsic motivation, which means the sample enjoyed learning with GenAI rather than considering it meaningless. As a result, the findings demonstrated that personal interest plays a more significant role than regulatory factors in reducing amotivation towards GenAI. Therefore, this study concluded that both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to learn with GenAI should be taken into account in teacher training programs.
