LAB Teaching in times of AI

ABSTRACT:

Teaching in general and language teaching is changing based on the emergence of AI tools. AI tools are used by teachers, educators and students. It is not possible to ignore AI and the impact it has on teaching and learning. This raises the question of what does up-to-date teaching look like, especially language teaching. What language skills become important when working with AI? In what ways can AI be integrated into teaching and individual lessons? What language is provided by AI tools? How can prompting and “lab thinking” be trained? “Lab thinking” meaning how AI tools use language input to generate answers and what language is used in the answers. By doing so, critical thinking becomes an integral part of teaching. Tina Austin’s UnBlooms provides a framework of how to integrate AI in teaching and learning. By doing so, it is not only possible to provide up-to-date teaching but also to equip students with the necessary skills for their future where AI may become part of everyday life. Through UnBlooms critical thinking and reflection is fostered and trained. These two skills become more and more important when AI tools offer ready-to-use answers because students do not longer rely on acquiring knowledge step-by-step according to Bloom’s lower order thinking skills to higher order thinking skills but by being able to deconstruct answers and being able to categorize the individual components of the given answer. By doing so, students learn how to make meaning of information given to them by AI tools and to ask critical questions and reflect on the outcome of their answers.
