ABSTRACT:

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education has been attracting a lot of scholarly attention especially since the launch of generative AI. However, existing studies largely focus on “latter stages” of AI adoption regarding its effects on students and teachers with limited research efforts found regarding the roles played by teacher-student relationship and learning motivation of university students for facilitation of AI adoption. Therefore, this exploratory investigation takes a few steps back by delving into the roles of teacher-student relationship and learning motivation of students in the context of facilitating AI adoption under the framework of self-determination theory. Besides, this study also attempts to work on another research gap regarding whether low-performing students will be less motivated for adoption of AI and learning in general in comparison with high-performing students. To address the exploratory and qualitative nature of its research design, the study triangulates its findings leveraging: (1) data collected via focus groups with 30 students of different academic performance levels interviewed, (2) data collected via in-depth interviews with 6 expert participants from either education or AI field, and (3) thematic analysis by a second or verifying researcher. Interesting findings obtained from initial round of the investigation not only shed light on the research gaps of teacher-student relationship and learning motivation for adoption of AI but also provides managerial insights regarding irreplaceable roles that human teachers could play and should excel in to stay competent in the era of artificial intelligence.
