Rethinking Film Education Through Resilience: Institutional Learning Towards a Resilient Model

ABSTRACT:

Through increasing ecological, technological, and socio-economic uncertainties, higher education institutions in the arts need to rethink their pedagogical, institutional, and social roles considering resilience. This study presents a case study of the Department of Film Design and Directing at Başkent University (Türkiye) and its participation in the Resilience Roadmaps pilot program initiated by EIT Culture & Creativity. The study examines the co-creation process of the department’s resilience roadmap as a creative arts education institution, focusing on how resilience can be articulated in relation to film education, graduate employability, technological infrastructure, regional cultural engagement, and climate-conscious creative practices. Depending on institutional self-assessment documents, roadmap drafts, and reflective evaluation surveys completed during the program, the resilience roadmap is further informed by the department’s strategic focus on internationalization, strengthened sector collaboration, the development of practice-based educational infrastructure, and sustainability-driven activities, while also incorporating perspectives gathered through internal and external stakeholder engagements. Methodologically, the study uses a qualitative case study approach combining document analysis and reflective institutional evaluation. Findings indicate that while the roadmap work effectively supported strategic reflection, capacity mapping, and value-oriented goal setting, it also revealed structural limitations specific to university governance, as well as challenges in translating highly abstract resilience concepts into educational practices. The paper argues that resilience roadmaps can function as meaningful pedagogical and institutional learning tools when adapted to the governance realities of higher education and when supported by modular, practice-oriented implementation models.
