Challenges of Implementing Digital Technologies in Music Education – Latvian Case Study
Agnese Rozniece
ABSTRACT:
This study analyses Constellation class as a case study of digital technology integration in general education music programmes, focusing on its impact on teaching practice, student engagement, and implementation challenges. The project applies a practice-based model for learning digital music creation through the use of digital audio workstations, MIDI controllers, synthesisers, and targeted teacher professional development. Data from 20 teachers in 14 schools indicate that, despite the project’s strong potential to enhance students’ creativity, motivation, and digital competences, integration into the core curriculum remains uneven and is often limited to extracurricular activities. Key influencing factors include teachers’ professional confidence, availability of infrastructure, alignment with curriculum structure, and organisational conditions within schools. The study concludes that sustainable implementation of digital technologies requires long-term methodological and mentoring support, as well as a systemic approach that aligns pedagogical, technical, and organisational solutions.
