Strengthening the Learning Process: The Critical Role of Teachers in Student Engagement and Knowledge Construction in Secondary Schools in Cape Town, Western Cape
John Asante Boadi, Douglas Anokye
ABSTRACT:
The success of the learning process in schools largely depends on teachers’ role in fostering meaningful learning and encouraging active student participation. In the South African education system, especially in Western Cape Province, teachers are expected to go beyond traditional methods and adopt learner-centred strategies that boost engagement and deepen students’ understanding of the subject matter. This study explores how teachers contribute to strengthening the learning process by increasing student engagement and facilitating knowledge construction in selected secondary schools in Cape Town, Western Cape. Despite ongoing reforms, many classrooms still rely on teacher-centred approaches that limit student interaction, creativity, and critical thinking, which can negatively impact motivation and independent knowledge building. Therefore, this study examines how teachers’ instructional techniques, classroom management, and interactions influence student engagement and learning outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was used to gather both quantitative and qualitative data. Data collection involved structured questionnaires for students and teachers, classroom observations, and semistructured interviews with teachers. The sample included 120 participants—100 students and 20 teachers—from five secondary schools in Cape Town. The quantitative data were analysed descriptively, whereas the qualitative data were subjected to thematic analysis. The results indicate that teachers employing interactive, learner-centred strategies such as group discussions, collaborative learning, and problem solving significantly improve student engagement and support deeper learning. The study recommends ongoing professional development for teachers, increased institutional support for innovative pedagogies, and wider adoption of learner-centred methods to enhance teaching quality and student learning in South African secondary education.
