Work Redesign for Enhanced Employee Engagement and Productivity

Dr. Ruby Toh

ABSTRACT:

Businesses today are faced with rapid technological transformation, demographic shifts, and evolving macroeconomic conditions. In recent years, AI has emerged as a new force in redefining roles, reshaping workflows, and accelerating growth. The ability to adapt and grow in a world faced with constant and rapid changes has become a critical factor in an organisation’s success. This involves transforming the organisation’s operating model, workforce and culture strategically and holistically.
Successful work redesign has been shown to enhance employee engagement, motivation, performance, and overall well-being. For organisations with an ageing workforce, it enables them to mitigate talent shortages and retain institutional knowledge by adapting job scopes to the physical, cognitive and lifestyle needs of older employees, thereby extending the productive careers of more senior workers.
This paper seeks to explain the factors driving successful work redesign, and examines how job tasks, roles and work processes can be restructured and modified by the organisation (top down) or employees (bottom-up) to meet organisational goals. It further examines some common challenges faced by organisations in work redesign. This is followed by a brief discussion of empirical works that investigate the relationship between work redesign, skills development and adaptability, as well as areas of institutional support available for businesses.
