ABSTRACT:
Extreme weather events are well documented and they are becoming more frequent with the advent of climate change. Moreover, their potential impacts are significant, especially in rural areas where agriculture, which is particularly vulnerable to extreme weather events, is the main economic activity. The aim of this study is to analyse the impact of extreme weather events on Peruvian farming families by examining changes in agricultural production, livestock and forestry. The first phase of the research examines the differences between households that were affected by the El Niño phenomenon (FEN) and those that were not in year 2017, a moment in which this event was particularly damaging. The results of this first phase of research, which confirm differences in both the production and overall economic circumstances of Peruvian households in the context of the 2017 FEN phenomenon, contribute to a deeper understanding of their vulnerability and aspire to be of relevance to inform public policies.
