Evaluating the Impact of Competency-Based Learning Integrated with the 5Es Instructional Model in Higher Education
Maria Gregoria Concepcion
ABSTRACT:
This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Competency-Based Learning (CBL) when implemented through the 5Es instructional model – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate – in higher education contexts. Competency-Based Learning emphasizes the demonstration and mastery of clearly defined learning outcomes, enabling students to progress based on their ability to apply knowledge and skills rather than time spent in instruction. Meanwhile, the 5Es instructional model provides a structured, inquiry-based framework that promotes active learning, critical thinking, and sustains student engagement. Integrating these two approaches offers a promising pedagogical strategy for addressing the demands of 21st-century education, particularly the need for adaptable, skill-oriented learning environments.
Employing mixed-methods research design, the study examines both the measurable and experiential impacts of this integrated instructional approach. Quantitative data are collected through performance-based assessments designed to evaluate student competency attainment, academic achievement, and skill mastery. Complementing these data, qualitative insights are gathered through semi-structured interviews with students and faculty members to explore perceptions of engagement, instructional effectiveness, and learning experiences. This combination of methods allows for a comprehensive analysis of both outcomes and processes associated with the implementation of CBL within the 5Es framework.
The findings are expected to provide empirical evidence regarding the influence of this blended model on student performance, engagement, and competency development. By identifying strengths, challenges, and best practices, the study seeks to inform curriculum design and instructional strategies that support learner-centered education. Ultimately, the research contributes to the growing body of literature on innovative pedagogical models that align higher education practices with contemporary educational goals and workforce expectations.
