Connecting Classrooms to Industry: The SKyTeach STEM Teacher–Industry Partnership (STEM-TIP) Model for Authentic, Research-Based Professional Development

Martha Day

ABSTRACT:

The integration of authentic, real-world applications into STEM education remains a global challenge in preparing students for a rapidly evolving technological workforce. The SKyTeach STEM Teacher–Industry Partnership (STEM-TIP) initiative, developed at Western Kentucky University (USA), offers a replicable model that bridges the gap between education and industry through collaborative, research-informed professional development. Situated in South Central Kentucky—one of the United States’ leading manufacturing regions—the STEM-TIP program connects secondary STEM teachers, university faculty, and local manufacturing professionals through a series of eight interactive workshops. Each three-hour session includes an industry presentation highlighting current STEM practices and careers, a co-taught model lesson aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) frameworks, and reflective dialogue focused on inquiry-based pedagogy and 21st-century soft-skill development. Preliminary findings demonstrate increases in teacher self-efficacy, awareness of regional STEM career pathways, and classroom implementation of problem-based learning approaches. The project’s open-access online lesson repository extends its impact beyond participating schools, supporting continuous professional growth and community collaboration. By fostering partnerships among educators, universities, and industry professionals, STEM-TIP advances a sustainable framework for contextualized STEM teaching. This presentation will discuss program design, implementation strategies, evaluation outcomes, and implications for scaling similar initiatives globally to strengthen the connection between education and workforce readiness.
