Validating the French version of Motivated Strategies for Learning : Exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis
Nadine Talbot, Magatte Sarr
ABSTRACT:
In order, to establish the dynamics between classroom assessment performance anxiety, personal self-efficacy and self-regulation of the students, the abridged version of Motivated Strategies for Learning (MSLQ) has been translated into French. The questionnaire has 22 items, including 9 items measuring personal self-efficacy, 4 items relating to performance anxiety and 9 items on self-regulation. The response scale has a 7-point Likert scale from 1= not at all true for me to 7= very true for me. The translation process was a double direction one. The first phase was to translate from English to French, and the second phase was from French back to English. The third and final phase was to compare the original English version with the version generated in the third phase of the translation to ensure there were equivalents. Seven hundred forty-five students, including 358 girls and 368 boys from secondary school in Quebec, constitute the sample. For context, secondary schools in Quebec are similar to high schools in several other countries in the world. To ensure the validity of the scores for each variable under study, it is necessary to conduct exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. Results of exploratory factor analysis propose three factors that guide the confirmatory factor analysis. During this communication, the results of these analyses will be presented, such as, the number of factors retained, the adjustment indices, the internal consistency and a comparison with the original English version structure.
