Teaching Vocabulary Differently in EAP: Innovative Methods for Student Engagement
Raqiya Aamir
ABSTRACT:
Vocabulary acquisition is a cornerstone of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses, yet traditional approaches often fail to engage learners effectively. This paper explores alternative methods for teaching vocabulary to a group of 25 EAP students, emphasizing active learning and contextualization. Strategies include the use of digital tools, collaborative activities, and task-based learning to foster deeper understanding and retention. The study integrates techniques such as semantic mapping, gamification, and corpus-based exercises to enhance learner autonomy and motivation. Findings suggest that incorporating multimodal resources and interactive tasks not only improves vocabulary retention but also supports critical thinking and academic writing skills. This paper argues that shifting from rote memorization to dynamic, student-centered approaches can significantly impact language proficiency and learner confidence in academic contexts.
