Changing Assessment Methods in the Wake of AI

Eitan Machter

ABSTRACT:

The rise of AI in education is forcing a deep shift in assessment practices. Since students can easily generate texts, summaries, and solutions, traditional homework is losing its ability to measure authentic learning. As a result, assessments increasingly focus on original thinking, complex problem-solving, justification of reasoning, and real-time performance. Greater emphasis is placed on personalized tasks, in-class discussion, reflection, and research-based projects. This shift also requires transparency and explicit guidance on responsible AI use, ensuring that assessments measure genuine understanding rather than the ability to operate technological tools.
