A Classroom Investigation: Teacher Talk
Noof Al Harrasi
ABSTRACT:
This action research project investigates the appropriateness of a teacher’s classroom discourse and its impact on learner engagement in an intermediate-level English classroom. A 30-minute lesson was video-recorded, and the recording was analyzed using Walsh’s (2006) SETT (Self-Evaluation of Teacher Talk) framework. Drawing on theoretical perspectives that emphasize the qualitative aspects of teacher talk for effective second language acquisition, the study analyzes instances of teacher-student interaction to identify patterns and areas for development. The findings highlight the frequency of display questions and form-focused feedback, and their potential influence on student participation. The research underscores the importance of reflective practice, utilizing tools like video recording and the SETT framework, in refining teacher talk to optimize comprehensible input and foster more meaningful learner involvement.
