From Coursework to Alternative Assessment: Navigating Industry Projects with Confidence
Jing Fu, Laleh Tafakori
ABSTRACT:
Collaborative, cross-functional strategies are needed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry essentials. We seek collaborative actions across roles to help students in translating academic knowledge into industry-proposed projects. We will share our ideas and insights about organizing a workshop, cross schools, to help students to be ready for the coming final-year projects, which are likely to be proposed by industry partners. Apart from the products, as a frame of alternative assessment, we value the process of students navigating the industry projects with confidence and the teamwork experience evaluated through peer assessments and 360-degree feedback. It focuses on bridging the gap between academic learning and industry project requirements in areas such as basic programming, AI, and theoretical analysis of data/models. These kinds of knowledge are useful for managing literature reviews and understanding project scopes but rarely taught systematically. In the initial stage, we will focus on AI-related skills, such as stochastic modeling for reinforcement learning, and data analysis through neural network, including relevant programming skills though Python.
