Ethical Standards in Distance Learning: The Importance of Clear Rules

ABSTRACT:
The shift to distance learning poses unique challenges compared to traditional face-to face educational settings, particularly in ensuring equitable and accessible teaching and assessment methodologies. Recent applied research conducted at Tallinn Health Care College focused on the application of academic ethics within the distance learning framework. This research utilised a qualitative approach, conducting twenty semi-structured interviews with academic staff to explore the conveyance of academic ethics in remote environments. The findings indicate that transitioning to distance learning necessitates the establishment of specific agreements and rules to maintain an ethical learning process. The formation and implementation of these regulations proved more expedient and effective within smaller departmental units. Additionally, encouraging open dialogues and consistent faculty meetings can improve consistency in including guidelines in the instructional methods. This study underscores the importance of establishing clear ethical guidelines at the outset of a distance learning program to ensure integrity and fairness in educational practices.
