Learner Perceptions of Effective EFL Teachers: Qualities and Skills

Andrew Leichsenring

ABSTRACT:

Research supports the concept that effective EFL teachers play an important role in successful student learning and academic achievement (Campbell et al., 2004; Markley, 2004). Measuring teacher effectiveness can be considered critical to the improvement of EFL student learning and teacher performance (Agudo, 2019). The qualities and skills that learners desire in their teachers have been shaped by factors relating to changing learning environments during the COVID-19 pandemic and the post-COVID-19 period. This presentation reports on developing trends of learner perceptions of effective EFL teacher qualities and skills. The discussion includes various studies from the pre-COVID-19 to post-COVID-19 periods (Pishgadam et al., 2023; Rifiyanti, 2020; Tran & Duong, 2021; Wright, 2017; Zheng, 2023). Findings from these and other studies will be analyzed with reference to the presenter’s fieldwork. Future directions for effective EFL teacher oriented research will be shared.
