Including Student Partners in Curriculum Redesign

Dr. Candyce Clark

ABSTRACT:

The University of Reading has undergone a review of the academic year structure and the programmes that are offered. This was done primarily in response to student feedback and in order to create a more sustainable model. The assessment structure has been redesigned and the modules have been redesigned in such a way as to fit this model. In the Department of Chemistry, a student partner was appointed to work with the Director of Teaching and Learning (DTL) to provide input from the student body into the structure of the new curriculum and modules as well as the authentic assessment strategies that would be used. The student partner provided feedback from the wider student body around the programme structure they would like to see as well as how these new modules would be assessed. The aim was to develop a more student-centred Chemistry programme This paper looks at the strategy that was used by the DTL to use the information gathered by the student partner and how that strategy was successfully implemented in the initial phases of the programme redesign.
