Dr. Alicia Aiken
ABSTRACT:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the challenges students face in academic writing as well as explore the possible causes of their writing challenges which could be based on their socio-cultural background, a Hermeneutical Phenomenological study. Fifteen (15) persons constituted the sample, which comprised of Ten (10) first year university students and Five (5) faculty lecturers from the faculties of Humanities and Education and Pure and Applied Science. Document analysis, interviews and the questionnaire were used as data collecting instruments. Results were presented and discussed qualitatively. The study revealed that students are impacted by their socio-cultural background attending to academic writing. The paper recommends that universities focus on the integration of writing into teaching pedagogies throughout the development and implementation of a writing-across-the-curriculum (WAC) initiative.
