Emberá Female Genital Mutilation
Maria del Carmen Arango Tejada
ABSTRACT:
This research study addresses a comprehensive analysis of the lack of diligence on the part of the Colombian State in relation to its foreign policy and its constitutional framework regarding the safeguarding of the human rights of women, girls and adolescents belonging to the Emberá ethnic group, under an indigenous ethnic differential approach. Through a critical evaluation of state political dynamics and the exercise of indigenous autonomy in the context of the practice of female genital mutilation as a form of gender violence, a substantial conflict is identified between the promotion of the human rights of Emberá women, girls and adolescents and the collective rights of indigenous peoples. This discrepancy is particularly evident in the inadequate application of intercultural dialogue and the insufficient role of the State as guarantor of rights. Finally, a conclusion is offered that includes proposals for political and legal actions at both the national and international levels, in line with the principles of interculturality and gender equity.
