ABSTRACT:

This study investigates the influence of the first (native) language on the formation of linguistic consciousness through a comparative analysis of associative fields in Irish and English. Utilizing an associative experiment methodology, participants fluent in both languages were presented with stimulus words related to “image formation” and asked to generate associations. This approach offers a robust means to elucidate the impact of language on cognitive processes. The results reveal distinct associative patterns influenced by participants’ native languages, underscoring the role of linguistic background in shaping cognitive associations. This study contributes to our understanding of linguistic consciousness and its interplay with language acquisition and cognition.
