ABSTRACT:
Sustainable waste management, particularly in urban areas, is a pressing global challenge closely linked to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11.6 target. While numerous strategies have been proposed to address this issue, the rule of business education in empowering sustainable waste management practices remains underexplored. This research presents a case study conducted on Cihampelas Shopping Street, a vibrant commercial hub in Bandung City, Indonesia, to investigate the impact of business education on waste management in an urban setting. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining surveys, interviews, and waste audits, to comprehensively evaluate the current waste management practices in the Cihampelas aera. It also assesses the effectiveness of a business education program to implemented among local businesses to improve waste segregation, reduce waste generations, and promote recycling. Findings reveal a multifaceted picture of waste management in urban commercial areas. Despite the lack of comprehensive waste management infrastructure, the introduction of tailored business education significantly enhanced awareness and practices related to sustainable waste management among local businesses. These businesses, after participating in the program, reported increased waste segregation rates, reduced waste volumes, and improved recycling practices. Furthermore, the program fostered a sense of social responsibility, encouraging businesses to collaborate on waste management initiatives and engage with the local community. The lessons drawn from the Cihampelas case study offer valuable insights for policymakers, businesses, and educators seeking innovative solutions to urban waste management challenges worldwide.
