Internationalization of Curriculum: A Comparative Study of Hard and Soft Disciplines
Betty Hui, Cecilia Chun
ABSTRACT:
The Internationalization of Curriculum(IoC) has become increasingly important in recent years as the world has become more interconnected and globalized. By incorporating international perspectives and pedagogical approaches into their curricula, teachers and students can reap numerous benefits. IoC benefits both students and teachers. It broadens students’ horizons and fosters a comprehensive worldview. Teachers adopt new teaching methods, collaborate globally, and enhance their knowledge base by working with colleagues from different countries and disciplines. This prepares students for a globalized world and equips teachers with new skills and approaches to teaching. The survey conducted in 2021 among 60 teachers who had received funds to implement their internationalized curriculum revealed significant findings. It highlighted the differences between the perspectives of internationalization in hard and soft disciplines, providing a nuanced understanding. Moreover, the survey identified the key enablers and elements required for the successful implementation of internationalized curricula, offering practical insights for educators. Given the significant benefits that IOC offers for teachers and students, it is not just a beneficial aspect of education but a necessity in preparing students for a globalized world. Therefore, it is imperative to prioritize this aspect of education to ensure that students are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
