ABSTRACT:

India is a country with people of various ethnicities, classes, castes, genders, regions, and religious differences. The prosperous and promising Information Technology (IT) industry in India and the advantage of the demographic divide, with a high number of educated and skilled workforce have attracted global attention. Indian IT Professionals are vital for delivering technology according to the required user specifications, quality, and expectations, nationally and internationally, since Indian IT caters to clients in the USA, UK, Europe, and other Global North and Global West. Organizational principles, methods, strategies, goals, and cultures affect their practices, identities, and structures. Not much work has been done in the area of professionalism in the IT sector.  Moreover, the standardized term “IT Professionals” is used for IT workers, irrespective of their area, technology, level, or designation. Technical skills on their own are insufficient. It needs to be complemented with appropriate behavioral skills as well to earn the status of a professional. From the behavioral perspective, the importance of moral responsibility, virtue, ethics, and trust cannot be emphasized enough. In this paper, a study of IT as a profession and IT professionalism through contemporary ideas and practices that include the areas of organizational behavior, professionalism, and the nature of work in the industry, has been carried out. This research aims to provide a holistic view of professionalism, specifically from the behavioral point of view, which is one of the least studied areas in the IT industry.
