Teaching about Cultural Heritage in Primary Education: A Study on Local Community Involvement
Vlasta Hus, Polona Jančič Hegediš
ABSTRACT:
Cultural heritage is of immense significance, serving as a valuable strategic resource and a substantial investment in society’s well-being and cultural wealth. Cultural heritage should be nurtured from an individual’s earliest years as a fundamental element of a nation’s identity. This research aimed to research the local community’s role in integrating cultural heritage into primary education. The study involved 130 older-generation participants, shedding light on their opinions regarding the teaching and learning of cultural heritage content in primary schools and their level of involvement in passing cultural heritage legacy to younger generations. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Results indicate that while older community members acknowledge the importance of cultural heritage education, limited collaboration with schools and kindergartens persists, with those participating often engaging through workshops and presentations. This study underscores the importance of bridging the gap between educational institutions and local communities in nurturing cultural heritage within primary education.
