The Portrait of The Academic as An Art Consumer

Nimet Keser, Seda Şengül

ABSTRACT:

This study aims to determine the level of participation of academics in Turkey in art consumption, the nature of their relationship with art, and the ways in which they experience art as consumers. As producers of intellectual capital, academics are not only carriers of knowledge but also of cultural and aesthetic taste. In this context, not only the production but also the reception and evaluation of art require a qualified audience. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital and James O. Young’s emphasis on the educated viewer.
The research is structured using a quantitative method. A questionnaire comprising 11 demographic questions and 29 items measuring art consumption behaviors was developed as a data collection tool. The content validity of the questionnaire was ensured through expert opinions, and necessary revisions were made following a pilot study. Academics working at various universities across Turkey were reached through convenience sampling. The data will be analyzed using the SPSS program; whether the independent variables influence art consumption will be examined using logit and multiple regression models.
This study is one of the first comprehensive attempts to understand the tendencies of artistic participation among academics, who are key carriers of cultural capital in Turkey. Since the quality of art consumption is shaped not only by personal taste but also by educational level, social status, and cultural access, the research aims to provide significant findings for art policies and cultural planning.
