Exploring the Notion of Peace in Islam: An In-depth Analysis of Qur’anic Discourse

Dr. Zia ul Haq

ABSTRACT:

The Holy Qur’an contains numerous texts underscoring the significance of safeguarding lives and property, as exemplified in Surah Al-Baqarah: Verse 195, “And do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands,” and Surah An-Nisa: Verses 29-30, “And do not kill yourselves.” Consequently, the preservation of life and property is an inherent and instinctual concern that applies universally. A secure environment and peaceful atmosphere are crucial for the advancement and development of human societies. Islam, as a religion of peace and harmony, emphasizes the importance of societal peace and security and denounces violence in all its forms for all people. According to the Qur’an, the diversity of tribes and races exists for mutual understanding, as stated in Surah Al-Hujurat: Verse 13, “O people, indeed, We created you from a male and a female and made you into peoples and tribes that you may know each other.” This verse highlights the necessity for people to recognize, establish relationships, and interact with one another despite cultural and value differences. Currently, there are misconceptions about the teachings of the Holy Qur’an in non-Muslim societies. Many perceive that the Qur’an contains aggressive statements towards other religions and nations. However, this perception is inaccurate. Islam aims to establish justice, equality, and peace among peoples, and it unequivocally opposes murder, extremism, and terrorism. This study illuminates the importance of peace from an Islamic perspective, as derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Utilizing a descriptive analytical approach, the research examines various verses emphasizing the significance of peace in the Holy Qur’an and analyzes them in the context of prominent scholarly opinions. The study concludes that the Qur’an is fundamentally a book of peace, devoid of any aggressive statements against any group of people. The study also offers key suggestions and recommendations based on its findings.
