Gender Equality in the Teacher’s Initial Training in Morocco
Gassim Zouhair
ABSTRACT:
Despite the progress achieved in Moroccan education system in terms of promoting gender equality, it has turned out that the statu quo of inequalities still persists because of teaching practices. The analysis of the syllabus of teacher’s initial training in Morocco revealed that this training focused only on didactics by paying more attention to the content of their curriculum and to how to educate students. However, if this type of training is compatible with some school disciplines (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, etc.), there are nevertheless others (Islamic Education, History, Sexual Education, etc.) where moral, political and emotional dimensions impact continuously teachers’ practices. Thus, we believe that it is essential to review current training engineering in order to provide future teachers with skills and competences needed to promote gender equality. On the one hand, syllabus should be underpinned by gender equality. On the other hand, the objective of teachers should no longer be limited to dispensing declarative or even procedural knowledge) but also to contributing to the development of students’ psychosocial skills in an egalitarian citizen’s perspective.
