ABSTRACT:

The present study explores the relationship between psychological resilience and self-perception of primary and secondary education teachers. Psychological resilience focuses on an individual’s ability to react to life’s challenges with optimism and flexibility. Self-perception refers to an individual’s understanding of his-/herself, including aspects of his/her personality, abilities, and emotions. To explore the connection between the two concepts and their impact on teachers’ performance, we proposed three research questions, namely: a) Is there a statistically significant correlation between the dimensions of psychological resilience (professional, emotional, motivational, social) and demographic characteristics of the sample? b) Is there a statistically significant correlation between resilience, self-perception, and educational level? c) To what extent does gender influence the relationship between psychological resilience and selfperception? We applied the quantitative approach, administrating an online questionnaire to 148 Cypriot primary and secondary school teachers during March 2024. The questionnaire consisted of three parts: A PIF (demographics), the Teachers’ Self-Concept Evaluation Scale (TSCES), and the Multidimensional Teachers’ Resilience Scale (MTRS). We conducted the survey online using a single questionnaire uploaded on the Anketa online platform and distributed through several social media outlets. We analyzed the data using the SPSS 25.0 software. Findings indicated that there is a strong positive correlation between teachers’ resilience and self-perception, but also between positive and negative self-perception. Enhancing mental resilience can help improve self-perception, and understanding these relationships can help develop more effective support strategies for teachers.
