The Relationship Between Certain Key Components of Parental Involvement and Minority Student Academic Outcomes

William Jeynes

ABSTRACT:

This study uses meta-analyses to examine the effects of some of the most important components of parental involvement and their relationship with K-12 student academic achievement. These important components include parental expectations, parental style, and relational parental involvement. This meta-analysis includes 98 quantitative studies. The results indicated that statistically significant effects emerged across students of differences in backgrounds, including difference by age groups, race, gender, and nationality. The results were also substantial in the highest quality studies. The largest effects emerged for the parental expectations component of parental involvement. Nevertheless, the effects for parental expectations, parental style, and relational parental involvement were all quite substantial in size. Moreover, the combination of these factors working together was quite robust. The significance of these results is discussed.
