Empowering Parents as Active Partners in Children’s Learning
Gnanaseharan Selliah
ABSTRACT:
In today’s rapidly changing educational environment, the role of parents has shifted from passive supporters to essential partners in guiding and developing students’ learning and social-emotional skills. Parents play a crucial role in children’s education, yet many educational institutions struggle to engage families as active partners in the learning process. This presentation focuses on practical and inclusive strategies to engage parents more deeply in leadership, decision-making, and support systems that drive student success.
The discussion centers on actionable strategies in three key areas: engaging parents in leadership initiatives, collaborative decision-making, and student support. It highlights inclusive models that honor cultural diversity, family dynamics, and socio-economic realities, ensuring that all parents, regardless of background, are encouraged to contribute to their children’s academic growth. Case studies of schools that successfully implemented parent partnership models are analyzed to extract replicable strategies and lessons learned. By redefining parents as co-educators and valued stakeholders, this session supports a collective effort to enhance learning outcomes and foster sustainable partnerships between schools and families. Attendees will explore key strategies for drafting policies and building school cultures that foster trust, transparency, and teamwork. This session will empower educators, school leaders, and policymakers with actionable tools to transform parental involvement into empowered parent leadership, aligning school practices with the shared goal of holistic student success.
