ABSTRACT:

This paper examines the effectiveness of project-based learning (PBL) combined with international collaboration in higher education, specifically through a project involving students from three global institutions developing an online game on sustainable development goals. The international project encouraged students to utilise the design thinking process over 24 hours by means of idea generation, prototyping, and evaluation, which was specifically aimed at increasing awareness of global sustainability challenges and improve cross-cultural understanding and cooperation. Qualitative analysis identified key benefits: enhanced cross-cultural collaboration, personal growth through increased confidence and overcoming introversion, and the significance of teamwork and shared goals in a diverse team setting. Additionally, the project provided exposure to innovative educational practices and encouraged creativity in developing and refining ideas. The findings support PBL’s potential to prepare learners with the skills, knowledge, and empathy needed to address global issues, highlighting its transformative role in education for achieving sustainable development goals. Additionally, this project demonstrates the potential of utilising project-based learning with international collaboration in cultivating a generation of learners equipped with the knowledge, skills, and empathy necessary to tackle global challenges, thereby highlighting the transformative power of education in achieving sustainable development goals. The findings of this study indicate that project-based learning environments can serve as catalysts for personal transformation, essential for leadership and management roles. Additionally, the findings suggest that similar collaborative projects can foster a deeper understanding of team dynamics and effective leadership strategies.
