ABSTRACT:

The topic of the coping strategies used by students in full-time health profession programs — specifically General Nurses, Midwives, and Clinical Social Workers — at the College of Polytechnics Jihlava (Czech Republic). It is presumed that these students experience a higher stress level due to the nature of their future professions. To explore how the research group manages obstacles, challenging tasks, and difficult life situations, an internationally standardized questionnaire, SVF 78, was utilized, along with four additional questions designed by the researcher. The research showed that students in the bachelor of social work, nursing and midwifery programmes use little more negative strategies (self-blame, resignation, perseveration, escape), where perseveration (i.e., the inability to detach thoughts from the stress experienced) is the most common strategy in response to stress. It is not positive outcome, because the nursing and social work profession is among the most exposed to work strain with negative consequences for their physiological health and psychological well-being. Therefore It would be very useful if the topics of positive psychology and psychohygiene became a compulsory part of study programmes.
