ABSTRACT:

This paper explores the cutting-edge LEARN (Language Automated Evaluation by Generating Answers/Questions from CaRtooNs) tool that harnesses the power of advanced Generative AI technology to facilitate more effective learning of the mother tongue for primary school children. Developed as a collaborative effort between the National Institute of Education at Nanyang Technological University and the Singapore Institute of Technology, this innovative tool is specifically designed to empower students in Primary schools in Singapore to enhance their proficiency in Tamil, Malay, and Mandarin Chinese languages. To assess the tool’s effectiveness, a comprehensive evaluation was conducted using a representative sample of users comprising over 1000 pupils from ten primary schools in Singapore. By extracting lexicon items from Primary 1 and 2 textbooks and analyzing accompanying images with detailed descriptions, the research team aimed to gain insights into the user population’s language learning patterns. In addition to text analysis, voice recordings of the students were collected to provide a holistic dataset for evaluating spoken language skills. This multifaceted approach seeks to improve mother tongue language proficiency. The far-reaching implications of this research extend beyond Singapore’s borders, holding potential benefits for other countries seeking to enhance language proficiency among their student populations.
