ABSTRACT:

A variety of methods can be used to increase student motivation, for example different types of gamification strategies. Among such methods, the StudiSQ app incorporates various gamification elements. In the app, students can independently repeat content from courses in the form of quizzes. Gamification elements such as badges, ranking lists and duels are used to increase motivation. Approximately 60 students took part in an evaluation of the app with a focus on usability, user experience and learning effect. This was measured using two tests, with some of the participants using StudiSQ to prepare for the second test and others using conventional learning methods. In terms of usability (65.8/100) and user experience (4.1/7), results were medium to slightly positive. This can be explained by the prototype status of the app, which impacted the overall user experience due to existing bugs. In terms of the learning effect, all students performed worse in the second test. However, a positive trend could be recognized among the students who used StudiSQ for preparation. Compared to the students who did not use the app for preparation (-0.61 points), these students deteriorated less on average (-0.39 points). Overall, around 80% of participants stated that they would use the app, which supports the overall positive trend in usability, user experience, and learning outcomes. Despite this trend, the evaluation revealed that further development is necessary to improve usability and user experience and thus realize frequent usage by teachers and students.
