Empowering Academic Success: Best Practices for Teaching EAP in Saudi Arabia

Prof. Majed Abu Dabeel

ABSTRACT:

Teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) in Saudi Arabia has emerged as a critical area of focus in higher education, given the increasing demand for English proficiency in academic and professional contexts. This study explores the best practices for EAP instruction tailored to Saudi learners, considering cultural, linguistic, and educational challenges. Key strategies identified include integrating context-specific materials that align with students’ academic disciplines, fostering critical thinking skills, and utilizing interactive teaching methodologies to
enhance learner engagement. The research highlights the importance of professional development for EAP instructors, equipping them with modern pedagogical tools and techniques, such as blended learning models and task-based teaching approaches.
Findings indicate that Saudi learners benefit most from personalized learning paths, supported by technology-enhanced resources and collaborative tasks that mimic real-world academic scenarios. However, systemic challenges such as large class sizes and variability in language proficiency levels require urgent attention.
For policymakers and educational institutions, the study recommends investing in specialized EAP training programs for educators, developing localized EAP textbooks, and ensuring continuous curriculum updates to meet global standards. These initiatives are essential to strengthening Saudi students’ academic competencies and competitiveness in international academic and professional arenas.
