ABSTRACT:

Seasons have an impact on psychological health. Changing air temperatures and daylight hours affect individual behavior. Accordingly, this study examined whether individuals’ helping behaviors differ according to summer and winter. In addition, the moderating roles of sleep duration and positive relationships in the effect of season on helping behavior were examined. The study, which was prepared with a quasi-experimental design, was conducted in August, the summer season. In a study in which 55 university students participated, the participants were first given the Emotion Scale before the manipulation to measure their emotional levels. Participants were then randomly assigned to summer or winter season manipulations. In both seasons, participants were given text describing the general characteristics of the season and a photopraph making a visual description of the season. After the manipulation, the participants completed the PERMA Well-Being Scale, helping sub-dimension items of the Prosociality Scale, financial aid text, and Demographic Information Form. In this form, participants were asked about their average daily sleep duration and personal information. The data obtained in this study, for which permission was obtained from the Balıkesir University Social Sciences and Humanities Ethics Commission, were analyzed using the SPSS 22.0 analysis program, and Hayes PROCESS plug-in. According to the findings, the participants’ well-being levels, helping behaviors, financial aid, and sleep duration differed significantly according to season. In addition, summer and winter were found to have an effect on helping behavior, and sleep duration and positive relationships had a moderating roles in this effect.
