Didactic Innovation and Interculturality: Transforming the Teaching of English in the Q’eqchi’ Rural Communities of Guatemala
Cristian Camilo Reyes-Galeano
ABSTRACT:
This research addresses the need to improve English language teaching in rural Guatemalan contexts, specifically in the indigenous Q’eqchi’ community. Teachers in this region face critical challenges, including the disconnection of the national curriculum with local realities, deficiencies in linguistic and didactic training, and a lack of adequate pedagogical materials. The purpose of this study is to provide contextualized and relevant training for educators, integrating English with the Q’eqchi’ worldview and culture. The methodology employed includes training workshops, collaborative development of pedagogical materials, and monitoring and evaluation sessions that facilitate the exchange of experiences and good practices in teaching English as a foreign language. This collective approach aims to bridge the gap in teacher training and create resources that provide relevant and meaningful English language teaching for learners, while promoting an intercultural dialogue between ancient and modern knowledge. Expected outcomes include the improvement of teachers’ pedagogical skills, the creation of materials that reflect local culture, and the introduction of innovative pedagogical approaches, contributing significantly to the field of intercultural education and foreign language didactics.
