Cultural Values and Their Influence on Youth Participation in International Exchange Programs. Comparative Analysis of Applicants from Poland and Turkey

Katarzyna Schrager

ABSTRACT:

The study investigates the cultural values, motivations, and expectations of youth applying to international exchange programs, with a focus on applicants from Poland and Turkey. Drawing on survey data, the analysis explores how values such as personal growth, community collaboration, cultural diversity, and social justice shape the decision to apply and the anticipated outcomes of participation. The findings reveal significant cross-cultural differences: Polish applicants prioritize individualistic goals, such as self-improvement and innovation, while Turkish applicants emphasize collectivist values, including teamwork and social justice. Despite these differences, both groups recognize the importance of intercultural communication and the potential of exchange programs to foster global understanding. These results underscore the need for culturally adaptive program designs that address diverse participant expectations and promote meaningful cross-cultural engagement.
