Academic Dishonesty Among English Learners in Japan

Andrew Warrick

ABSTRACT:

This presentation discusses the findings of a survey on academic dishonesty in English classes among first year students at a Japanese university. Academic dishonesty can take many forms, from deliberate plagiarism to submitting the same report for multiple courses, as well as other types of academic misconduct. In addition to using sophisticated AI writing programs, students in English language classes might also commit cross-lingual plagiarism, whereby they copy text in their native language and translate it into the target language. The goal of this research was to determine students’ attitudes towards various forms of academic dishonesty in different English class contexts, as well as get an approximation of the extent to which it occurs through self-reporting. Results show that the majority of students are aware that most forms of academic dishonesty are inappropriate and that only a minority of students reported committing academic dishonesty. The results are then discussed and suggestions are offered for language educators so that they can better inform their students of academic dishonesty and take other measures to prevent its occurrence.
