ABSTRACT:

The teaching of chemistry in Brazil is the result of a trajectory filled with stories and challenges intertwined with the forms of government and the educational policies of the time. Accordingly, this study explores the historical development of chemistry education in Brazil up to the present day, focusing on basic education, particularly high school. This qualitative research investigates key regulatory and advisory documents related to educational policy in the country, along with how teachers present chemical content and conduct their lessons. It is crucial to note that the political contexts of the eras discussed in this research had a direct impact on educational objectives in the country, influencing how teaching is delivered and practiced in classrooms, the content that is prioritized, and the profile of students that the education system seeks to shape at the conclusion of each stage of basic education. The findings highlight the presence of chemistry education from the Colonial and Imperial periods to the proclamation of the Republic, evolving in contemporary times with different perspectives aligned with educational and training goals. Finally, it was identified that the main factor related to the inclusion of chemistry as a curricular component in Brazilian high school education was the need to develop a qualified workforce to meet labor market demands.
